Abstract:

This proposal was generated by the Challenges of Data for Performance Measures Workshop held on July 8, 2006. The concept was to bring both performance measures and data professionals together to share experiences and identify key issues relating to the data sources used to support performance measures. A total of 25 state and MPO representatives participated in active discussion groups, along with 13 others. This proposal was ranked No. 4 in importance by the workshop planning committee that was led by Randy Halvorson of Minnesota DOT. The objectives of this proposal were to: research the best practices and cost–benefit of real-time transfer of performance data to the customer; document the success of real-time data as an influence on individual travelers to adjust travel patterns based on the availability of data; determine what information is needed and how to make it available to the customer in a useful framework that will contribute to the spread of demand between modes to optimize system capacity; and research how quickly travelers can absorb and change choices.
