Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to explore the influence the UK government actually has in terms of shaping and directing airport policy when it is no longer the owner of the main airports. According to the UK Government, UK air travel has increased five-fold over the last 30 years and is projected to increase by between two and three times current levels by 2030. In order to accommodate this growth the Government published a new UK airports policy in 2003, the Future of Air Transport, the first formal policy document relating to air transport since 1985 (UK Government, 1985) The issues surrounding UK airports policy have been brought into the public eye by the takeover of BAA by the Spanish Ferrovial Group and the Office of Fair Trading’s announcement that it was considering looking into the UK airports market (Office of Fair Trading, 2006).
