Abstract:

The term Personal rapid transit (PRT) means automated people mover systems, which use their own track and are able to provide a demand responsive, individual transportation service for relatively high traffic volumes. Currently no PRT systems are in use, but there are many research projects and plans for build them. One of the places where this kind of system has been planned is the Aviapolis area near Helsinki-Vantaa international airport in Finland. As part of the system design, a microscopic simulation tool was developed to simulate PRT systems and to test different track configurations. This paper describes the new simulation tool developed in the project. The performance of a simple control system is evaluated using the simulation tool. Also some indicative results on the feasibility of a PRT system in the Aviapolis area are given.
