Abstract:

Individuals' decisions on whether to obtain a driver's license have a substantial effect on their travel behavior for the rest of their lives, and on their lifetime total CO2 emissions. In countries where society is motorized, non-drivers decide to obtain a driver's license, with little cognitive thought, because others have one. Consequently, they might be unaware of the negative aspects of automobile use. It was hypothesized that providing non-drivers with objective information would influence their choice on whether to obtain a license. This paper conducted a field experiment to obtain objective information (n = 158), and found that information about the risks, costs, and enjoyment of automobile use affected their attitude towards life using an automobile, and whether they possessed a driver's license 18 months after the intervention.
