Abstract:

This is a feasibility study of an Automatic People Mover (APM) application for the City of Newark in New Jersey. The study is primarily designed to evaluate existing conditions and problems in the City of Newark, such as: traffic demands, available mass transportation system, land use development and availability, as well as environmental concerns. A nationwide case review provided background and comparison information that should be considered for implementation strategies, which includes critical issues such as community concerns, system costs, public benefits, possible pollution, and landscape changes. A proposed APM route is designated after an evaluation of current traffic conditions, land use and system capability. The objective of this feasibility study is to evaluate the applicability of the APM technology to increase mobility, efficiency, accessibility and enhance transit service quality. The potential benefit of replacing the current LOOP, a small bus circulation system I downtown Newark, with APM technology will not only reduce passenger walking, waiting, and overall travel time but also provides an anchor for downtown business development.
