Title: Field Testing of Silty Sand Stabilized Using Combinations of Hydraulic Cements, Fibers, and Polymer Emulsions

Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: Nontraditional soil stabilization additives are being investigated as part of a research program for construction of contingency airfields for the US Army. Laboratory evaluations of several commercially available materials have been performed to provide comparisons of these materials for stabilization of silty sand. The laboratory investigation evaluated Portland cement (Type I and Type III), acrylic polymers, polypropylene fibers, and various combinations of these materials for stabilizing soil. In order to validate the laboratory data, field test sections were constructed with the best performing stabilizers and trafficked with simulated C-130 aircraft loads. The stabilizers were added to the soil by mixing with a rotary mixer and then compacted at the optimum moisture content of 5%. Short term (1 day) and long term (28 day) curing were both used to determine performance. Traffic was simulated with a 13,600 kg (30,000 lbs) load on a C-130 tire inflated to 655 kPa (95 psi). Traffic continued until the stabilized pavement had a rut depth of 7.6 cm (3 in.) or until 1,000 passes of traffic was reached. The test sections were evaluated by obtaining surface profiles of the section with increasing traffic levels by using a rod and level. The rut depth of the section was also periodically measured using a straight edge placed perpendicular to the traffic direction across the section. The section stabilized with fibers and type III Portland cement was determined to be most resistant to permanent deformation with the traffic.
