Abstract:

While the relevance of coupling constraints defining when and for how long persons have to be corporeally present at a given location in physical space has long been recognized, operationalizing their ‘when’ dimension in empirical research is deceivingly difficult. This paper reviews previous measurement approaches and introduces the contours of a complementary and interdisciplinary perspective built around the concept of the time-space of arrival – a time-span appropriate for arrival at a destination. Key properties pertain include situation-specificity, the relevance of multiple temporalities, and the multiplicity of boundaries. These characteristics are illustrated with material from a mixed-method study centered on working parents’ trips to collect their children from childcare services and elementary schools in the Utrecht region, the Netherlands.
