Abstract:

This paper introduces a new passenger counting technology that can be used to automatically record the number of passengers boarding and alighting at individual bus stops. Different from existing automatic passenger counters (APC), the proposed system is video based capable of addressing the need for automatically counting passengers on congested transit routes with high density passenger boarding and alighting activities. The proposed system integrates a set of innovative algorithms to extract and track features associated with individual passengers appearing in a sequence of images and then derive passenger counts. The key elements of the proposed technology include multi-objects recognition, image segmentation, and feature matching. The system has been successfully evaluated in a real application environment with an average counting accuracy of over 95%.
