Abstract:

Currently, travel surveys are most commonly conducted by computer-aided telephone interviewing technology. However, technological advances, combined with declining response rates and the associated increase in the cost of telephone surveys, has led transportation planners to consider the development of more efficient ways to gather data, especially for smaller urban communities faced with budget limitations and specific data elements requirements. The increasing availability of the Internet creates an opportunity for a potentially more efficient, less costly means of collecting specific travel data. An efficient Internet-based travel survey has the potential to be an effective means of collecting specific data for inclusion into transportation planning models (e.g., trip generation and trip distribution). At the same time, it is recognized that the success of Internet surveys is based largely on Internet access, the levels of which vary greatly across most regions. This project examines the usefulness of an Internet survey method through a study travel data in a small urban community. The study specifically addresses the data obtained from an application of an Internet travel survey. The study concludes that for a small urban community, faced with a high level of automobile dependence and limited funding prohibiting a traditional survey, an Internet-based approach can provide area specific data elements to enhance transportation modeling or could be used in conjunction with traditional survey methods to reduce costs.
