It is the product of a 3-year research project sponsored by the Georgia Department of Transportation and conducted by researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology to help improve the walking environment and safety of pedestrian facility users in the State of Georgia. The Guidebook was developed based on a comprehensive evaluation of the state of the practice of pedestrian planning and sustained input from an advisory group comprising representatives of local, state and federal agencies with pedestrian planning or related functions, representatives of advocacy groups, and local and regional governing agencies. The Guidebook outlines methods for evaluating, prioritizing and funding pedestrian facilities for development; reviews current pedestrian laws in the State of Georgia; and provides guidelines on how to improve the safety and usability of pedestrian facilities. It can be used in conjunction with other resources for improving the pedestrian environment. This paper discusses the process used in developing the Guidebook and presents an overview of the Georgia Guidebook for Pedestrian Planning.
