Abstract:

As more and more departments of transportation, cities, counties and local municipalities perform overhead sign structure inspections, there is an ever-growing need for implementing a useful inspection method that focuses on what is important and ensures that required repairs and maintenance are implemented. Unlike bridge structures, there are no set inspection standards and recording methods for overhead sign structures. Realizing this, the South Carolina Department of Transportation had an element-based inspection system — similar to the bridge management system (PONTIS) — developed, which was used with their initial overhead sign structures inspection.
