The objective of the analysis is to evaluate whether: (a) the initial retroreflectivity value of a pavement marking product is a good indicator of its long-term performance relative to other products, and (b) a longitudinal-type test deck is suitable for testing the performance of intersection marking products. Ten products installed on both test decks are evaluated over a one-year period and their relative performances over time during the testing period are analyzed. At each measurement period, relative rankings of the products, based on their retroreflectivity readings, are developed for each test deck. Statistical analysis using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient is performed. The analysis at the longitudinal test deck showed that initial retroreflectivity rankings may provide a good indicator of the long-term relative performance of the marking. Therefore, the initial values may be used as acceptance criteria of the markings for use as longitudinal markings. However, this is not the case with the intersection markings. The subsequent rankings at the intersection test deck are significantly different from the initial rankings, indicating change in relative performance of the products over time. Therefore, initial readings may not be used as acceptance criteria for long-term relative performance of intersection markings. This study also illustrates that performance of products at longitudinal type test deck may not be representative of their long-term performance as intersection makings.
