Abstract:

Analysis of the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) data reveals that the greatest decrease in mobility for most Americans occurs not as they age, but when they stop driving. The number of elderly non-drivers will increase by 50% in the U.S. by 2025. Therefore, the author applies regression techniques to the 2001 NHTS data to identify and quantify variables related to elderly non-driver mobility. Twelve variables are found to be significantly related to the trip-making of the 4,000+ elderly non-drivers in the survey, including residential density which is investigated in detail. Based on the regression results, actions which may increase the mobility of elderly non-drivers are identified.
