Title: APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE OF PAVEMENT SURFACE PROPERTIES IN GERMANY
Accession Number: 00173547
Record Type: Component
Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: Three principal directions of work to provide skid-resistant surfaces are described, and the reasons are listed for not performing regular monitoring of the entire rural network of main roads. The examination of newly laid surfacings before opening to traffic is one of the 3 directions discussed here. New load asphaltic concrete can fail to offer a harsh microtexture due to excess binder accumulated at the top of the layer during rolling. Also, new laid cement concrete pavements offer slippery surfaces when wet due to insufficient treatment of the fresh concrete surface. A portable pendulum type skid tester is sufficient for measurements on these surfaces. The accumulation and application of experience with regionally standardized mix compositions is another area of effort. Limestone is excluded from the top layers, and the practice is outlined of spreading of crushed sand onto the hot layer during the rolling process. Other means of obtaining a coarse texture are discussed. The systematic evaluation of accident statistics to identify black spots under wet conditions has been carried out since the sixties, and is now part of an accident evaluation scheme that covers all aspects of accident occurrences.
