Title: BARGE IMPACTS ON BRIDGES: COLLISION TEST IN FLORIDA WILL AFFECT BRIDGE DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS
Accession Number: 00929282
Record Type: Component
Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: The replacement of the SR 300-Saint George Island Causeway bridge near Apalachicola, Florida, with a new bridge now under construction has provided the Florida Department of Transportation (DOT) an opportunity to measure barge impact forces directly. After the new bridge opens to traffic in 2003, Florida DOT will test-crash a hopper barge at various speeds into the older structure, to obtain direct measurements of the lateral forces imparted to the bridge piers. This article briefly describes the feasibility study for the full-scale test, the test parameters, and the preparations under way for the physical test phase in the summer of 2003. The test is expected to yield information that will influence bridge design codes worldwide.
