Title: AUTO RADIO OVERRIDE ALERT SYSTEM FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLES AND FOR RAILROAD-HIGHWAY GRADE CROSSINGS
Accession Number: 00824653
Record Type: Monograph
Availability: National Technical Information Service 5301 Shawnee Road Abstract: This Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) project developed and tested a transceiver override system for active automobile radios to warn drivers of approaching emergency vehicles. Various components of the system (antenna, transceiver, receiver and transmitter) were designed and tested in the laboratory. This was followed by prototype fabrication and field testing. The emergency message was transmitted over a narrow arc along the path of the emergency vehicle or at right angles to the path of the train. The message was repeated every 5 seconds and, through time-gating, was transmitted sequentially across the A, N11 FM bands. Tests demonstrated the feasibility of the system after further improvements in the antenna system. These improvements included an adaptive fast response tunable antenna and tunable filters.
