Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: Restrictions to mobility from policy or age-related declines in driving capability limit the lifestyles of elderly people. Maintaining an independent and meaningful lifestyle that is supported by driving requires an array of policy, service, infrastructure, and technical solutions. In-vehicle intelligent transportation systems (ITS) applications are an obvious technical solution. If ITS products are to be beneficial, they must accommodate the capacities of older drivers and the safety needs of all drivers. Older drivers may benefit from the array of ITS technologies being developed if the technologies are designed using human factors principles and practices. In this paper, a brief introduction to in-vehicle ITS technologies precedes a review of the empirical research on the in-vehicle ITS applications that have included older drivers as a user group. Given that many ITS applications are in the early stages of development, issues of design guidelines, standards, and evaluation methods also are discussed.
