Title: DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF AN ADVANCED IN-SITU SHEAR STIFFNESS TEST FACILITY FOR ASPHALT CONCRETE PAVEMENTS
Accession Number: 00815912
Record Type: Monograph
Availability: National Technical Information Service 5301 Shawnee Road Abstract: This Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) project developed a surface plate type method for measuring the in-situ shear strength of asphalt pavements. The method involves applying a torque directly to the asphalt pavement surface and relating the maximum applied torque to the shear strength of the asphalt pavement layer. A preliminary design of a second-generation shear test device was prepared and evaluated. A framework for a set of analytical models to predict pavement performance based on field shear data was developed. Based on test results, the final design of the shear test device was developed and further refined. The final design system was then fabricated and shakedown testing was performed to ensure that all components of the test system functioned properly. Field testing of the prototype system continues on asphalt pavements in the U.S. and Canada.
