Abstract:

Chapter 6 contains the papers presented on statewide goods movement and intermodal planning issues, discussion topics, and the results of the workshops on this topic. John Fuller, University of Iowa, comments on the lack of attention given to freight transportation by the public, urban authorities and state government. John Vickerman, Vickerman, Zachary, Miller, discusses megatrends in international shipping. James Covil, Wilbur Smith Associates, discusses the effect of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and other border crossing issues affecting statewide transportation planning. Dee Spann, Federal Highway Administration, covers motor carriers and the safety aspects of statewide transportation planning. Marsha Kaiser, Maryland Department of Transportation, addresses the effects of rail mergers and other intermodal trends on statewide transportation planning.
