Title: MARKET STUDY AND OPERATIONAL TEST RESULTS FOR THE INSTANT RENT-A-CAR (IRAC) STATION CAR FIELD TESTS
Accession Number: 00759153
Record Type: Monograph
Availability: National Technical Information Service 5301 Shawnee Road Abstract: This Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) project conducted operational tests of the Instant Rent-A-Car (IRAC) system. The IRAC system has been envisioned as the "missing link" in intermodal transportation use by providing conveniently reserved/rented compact automobiles at transit stations for the start and completion of transit trips. This report includes (1) a description of the research procedure and results used in this study, and (2) a preliminary market study that explores the commercial potential of this technology. This was a combined IDEA ITS and TRANSIT project. The ITS innovation is the successful integration of technologies (vehicle location, communication, reservation, and cost accounting) to produce an efficient fleet management process so that each vehicle can be used by several different drivers per day. As an innovative TRANSIT project, the economic and operational feasibility of an IRAC system was tested in association with a functioning mass transit system, the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART).
