Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: This paper evaluates the performance of bridges subjected to a major flood, determines the adequacy of design standards based on bridge performance, and recommends revisions to design standards where inadequacies are apparent. Hurricane Agnes caused severe flooding in Pennsylvania and New York, and several bridges and highways that were damaged by the floods in those states are discussed. The two major causes of bridge damage were scour at abutments and piers and impacting debris.
