Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: The state of the art of underwater tunneling is described as well as feasible areas for future research in the field. The history of underwater tunneling and methods of constructing and installing sunken tubes are briefly described. Future research is recommended in the areas of bottom sounding in order to obtain sufficiently accurate results in deep water; improved methods for testing welds must be developed; the present method for discovering voids requiring grout consists of rapping shell with rods or hammers should be improved; research in ways to improve the type of watertight points between sections of the tunnel and the methods for installing the points should be pursued.
