Abstract:

This report describes a wide angle optical sensor, and its associated signal processing, that have been developed for intersection surveillance. The 160 degree, distortion free, high resolution, all weather optical system provides omni-directional vehicle detection and tracking from a standard high resolution black and white video camera mounted above the intersection. A single sensor can thus track vehicles in all the approach and departure lanes of a complex intersection. This simplifies both installation and data processing. Preliminary results showing the feasibility of automated traffic reporting, with periodic statistical reports of vehicular traffic from specified detection zones, are reported.
