Abstract:

This paper begins with a very brief history of intermodal transportation, then discusses the role of information technology in the container revolution. Attention is then focused on information technology and intermodal operations. The gate house is considered as an example of information technology investment linked to operational spending. The paper concludes with a discussion of information technology developments of relevance to intermodal operations.
