Abstract:

The debonding of asphalt from mineral aggregates in the presence of water (stripping) has been a problem ever since asphalt paving came into existence. Many studies have sought a solution to the problem, but stripping continues to occur. A SHRP project was charged with developing a nondestructive technique for measuring the stripping of asphalt from siliceous aggregate in the presence of water. The main objective of the first phase of this study was to develop a spectroscopic technique for measuring in situ water at the interface between an asphalt and a model siliceous aggregate. This report describes the successful development of the water in situ measurement technique.
