Abstract:

This is a review of the literature regarding aspects of the health of man and the environment as related to the use of asphalt cements in the paving industry. The informaion in this state-of-the-art report includes the following: studies on the exposure of man and the environment to paving asphalt emissions; and potentially associated effect on human health identified through clinical and epidemiological reports and animal toxicological studies. This report also includes discussions on the presence and type of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in paving asphalts and asphalt emissions. Finally, several areas of needed research are suggested.
