Abstract:

R.F. Crecco discusses briefly the history of historic preservation of transportation-associated resources in America and the accomplishments of the National Historic Preservation Program during the past 25 years. B.A. Eberle examines historic preservation legislation, approaches to the investigation of historic resources, National Register of Historic Places criteria, some preservation examples from the historic and archeological programs of the Federal Highway Administration and the state transportation departments, and future challenges. E. DeLony and M.J. Auer discuss the challenges of historic bridge preservation. Inserts with this article describe (1) the Transportation Research Board's Preservation Committee, (2) historic preservation enhancements of the new Surface Transportation Assistance Act, and (3) the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) bridge documentation program.
