Abstract:

In this paper it is argued that bridge appearance must, in the end, be empirically assessed, and that there is a need for studies to determine what constitutes good appearance in the eyes of the public. Australian studies which included surveys to assess public opinion on parameters involved in the design of bridges are reviewed. Also included are a discussion on teaching correct visualization and a review of seven recent (1940-1986) Australian bridges.
