Abstract:
This paper on the aesthetic design of bridges begins by defining structural beauty. The building blocks for the definition are quality, artistic proportions, attractive forms, future acceptance, and compatibility. Attention is then focused on the actual job of designing the bridge. Here the truism applies that genius is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. Complicating the job is the fact that at least 90% of bridges are built on uninspiring sites. The type of structure and the principal material to be used will be selected early in the design process. Attention must be paid to specific details. The details discussed are piers and columns, abutments, superstructures, color, and textures. Also discussed are pedestrian structures and the incorporation of directional signs on the bridge structure.
