Abstract:
Most bridges in Sweden are designed by engineers without the involvement of architects. Often, the main criterion is good function at the lowest cost. However, for nearly all bridges in larger communities, such as Stockholm and Gothenburg, advice from architects is sought. In these projects, environmental conditions always have a dominating influence on design and appearance. Much labor has been expended by communities and by the road administration to achieve generous and elegant solutions for these bridges. The cost increase caused by architectural improvements can be estimated at 1 to 5% of the total cost for a simple bridge. Examples are given to illustrate what has been done with common urban and rural bridges in Sweden. Concluding sections of this paper discuss what is being done in Sweden to achieve better bridge aesthetics.
