It was not until the late 1970s that bridge designers and engineers realized the need to construct pedestrian bridges that enhanced the city environment. Hasune Crossover Bridge, completed in 1978, is one of the first elaborate works in Japan. Such bridges as this one gave birth to innovative trends in bridge design in Japan. One of these new trends evolved in the so-called New Towns, which were planned to separate pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The design features of the pedestrian bridges in several of these New Towns are discussed. Also discussed are the pedestrian decks that were introduced in the 1980s. Further discussion examines structural entertainment or visual play, the contextual approach in urban space, and a new approach that has been taken for the design of a group of pedestrian bridges in the planned extension area of Tama New Town.
