Abstract:

Limited usable land in heavily populated areas of Japan has often necessitated the design of unique bridge approaches. One such design is the spiral viaduct bridge approach. When this design is used, care is taken to make the structures aesthetically appealing. The tower design must meet the requisite structural requirements and at the same time retain the character-defining visual qualities of the bridge and surrounding landscape. Several of these outstanding spiral viaduct structures are described in this paper.
