Abstract:

This paper presents a brief history of bridge design in Italy, then discusses the influence of technical and economic factors on Italian bridge design. Next, the three mentalities of successful bridge design are outlined. These are (1) a creative and aesthetic mentality, (2) an analytical mentality, and (3) a technical and practical mentality. Final remarks concern general aesthetic principles for bridge design.
