Abstract:
The topic of this paper is the development of guidelines for the aesthetic design of bridges. The discussion covers the following: fulfillment of purpose--function; proportion; order; refining the form; integration into the environment; surface texture; color; character; complexity--stimulation by variety; and incorporating nature. This is followed by a discussion of aesthetics and ethics. Finally, the application of the guidelines is examined for arch bridges, beam bridges, cable-stayed bridges, suspension bridges, and truss bridges.
