The methods of direct moments, log-transformed moments, and mixed moments were compared in descriptive capabilities on the basis of computed root mean square deviation (RMSD) and mean absolute deviation (MAD) of the standardized variate. Using the performance indices, the most robust estimation method was sought. In many cases, depending on sample skewness, significant differences existed between the descriptive capabilities of these methods. However, no method performed in a clearly superior manner across the entire range of data. These results can be used in conjunction with previous Monte Carlo studies focusing on the predictive ability of these procedures to determine the most reliable moment-based estimation procedures.
