Abstract:

This brief history of embankment construction traces the use of embankments from those constructed by primitive civilizations to the embankments constructed relatively recently for the U.S. Interstate highway system. Many interesting facts are pointed out, such as the oldest technical records of construction using soils and the first engineering school in Europe. Also included is a brief summation of the developments in construction equipment that accompanied embankment developments.
