Abstract:

The 2-day 1986 conference was held in 4 sessions and included 14 presentations. The sessions covered the following topics: strategic planning and data needs for port and waterway development, analysis of inland waterway operations, developments in rail and port intermodal coordination, and port economic impacts and state funding programs. The presentations covered aspects such as strategic planning as it relates to inland waterways ports and deep-draft ports, data needs for port and waterway development, port tonnage reports, financial and operational conditions of barge companies, efficiency of barge operations, rail-barge tariff, double-stack container trains, and a model to determine the contribution of a port to the local economy. Tours of a double-stack container yard and the Controlling Locks on the Chicago River were organized on the second day.
