Digital Copy: Abstract: The current characteristics of wheelchairs are considered and ways in which they may be changed to improve their use in vertical transport systems are examined. Three types of wheelchairs are considered: user-propelled, attendant-propelled, and powered wheelchairs. The basic considerations for all are physical size, maneuverability, stability, barrier performance, ramp climbing and descending, and access to elevator controls.
