Title: Improving The Long-Term Performance Of Concrete Bridge Deck Using Deck Sealers
Accession Number: 01763438
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Using sealers on bridge deck surface reduce the penetration of chlorides into the concrete deck. thus reducing the corrosion of steel reinforcement and concrete deterioration. This will improve the long-term performance of the bridge deck life, and hence extend bridge deck life. Two concrete ready mixtures were being used in this research. Five deck sealers were studied to assess the effectiveness and performance of these commercially available sealers. Four laboratory tests were conducted on deck sealers. All laboratory tests are according to the specification of ASTM, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) reports series II. After finishing the laboratory tests, a statistical analysis “95% confidence interval” was done on the tests. All the sealers were assigned into different categories according to their performance, and according to the variation of the 95% confidence interval a weighting score was assigned to each category of sealer’s performance. To report the effect of the sealers, a comparison was made between the performance of the specimens covered with sealers and control specimens (i.e. specimens without any sealers). All the sealers were so effective in reducing the chloride ingress into the concrete.
