This report presents the development of two AASHTO guides for bridge preservation. One is a general guide to preservation of highway bridges, referred to as the Bridge Guide in this report. The other is a guide to preservation of highway bridge decks, referred to as the Deck Guide in this report. The Bridge Guide was approved for publication by AASHTO’s Committee on Bridges and Structures (COBS) in June 2019. The Deck Guide was submitted to AASHTO’s COBS for review and possible publication in 2020. The Guides provide information on highway bridges that are candidates for preservation, actions to preserve bridges, costs and benefits of bridge preservation, and the organization of programs for bridge preservation. The proposed AASHTO guides were developed based on data collected from representative agencies and include (1) catalogs of bridge element preservation actions and (2) the criteria and selection methodologies of bridge preservation actions, with associated costs and benefits for use in life-cycle cost analysis and possible integration into a bridge management system.
