Over the past few decades, state departments of transportation (DOTs) have increasingly used geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring technologies to inform safety, operational, and treatment decisions for these slopes. This synthesis documents current practice in DOTs for geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring technologies with a focus on the application of new technologies implemented in the last decade. Information for this study was gathered through a literature review, a survey of state DOTs, and follow-up interviews within selected agencies. Four case examples provide additional information on unstable slope instrumentation practice.
