Study on Bus Travel Time Reliability Using GPS-Based Bus Trajectory Data Under Mixed Traffic Conditions

Abstract:

This paper describes a study on bus travel time reliability that used GPS-based bus trajectory data under mixed traffic conditions. The authors used two routes with no dedicated bus lanes in Indore city (India). The selected road stretch represents a typical Indian urban roadway with varying roadway, geometric and land use characteristics under heterogeneous traffic conditions. The authors collected GPS-based travel time data of the two routes for a duration of six months; routes were divided into individual segments with respect to bus stops. Low, medium, and high variation segments are considered based on the average values of average travel time on all weekdays. Road widths for each segment on the two routes was determined. The authors categorized five different types of land use along these bus routes: airport, mixed, commercial, residential and institutional. The authors conclude that reliability thresholds proposed in this study can also be helpful for transit operators for the evaluation of different segments. In addition, level of service (LOS) of every segment can be averaged so as to arrive at the overall route LOS.
