Bridge Construction

Record URL: Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: The widespread use of accelerated bridge construction (ABC) technology has been impeded by the lack of an ABC-specific national design and construction specification. Presented in this article are two NCHRP projects that address this gap: (1) NCHRP Project 12-102 developed a national ABC design and construction specification, the AASHTO LRFD Guide Specifications for Accelerated Bridge Construction, and (2) NCHRP Project 12-98 studied tolerances in prefabricated elements and the dynamic effects of moving bridges from prefabrication staging areas to actual bridge sites. The goal of NCHRP 12-98 was to develop national guidelines for these two subjects that could be referenced in design and construction specifications. This article outlines the steps taken in the development and implementation of the resulting two guidelines and one guide specification.
