Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: This article discusses the uses and usefulness of the Transportation Research Thesaurus (TRT), a controlled vocabulary of transportation-related terms first developed to index records in the Transportation Research Board's Transportation Research Information Service (TRIS) databases. The TRT, which currently contains more than 12,000 terms, can help TRIS users narrow their search results and also find additional terms that might prove useful. Transportation agencies and universities have also utilized the TRT for their own database organization, indexing projects, and text mining projects. Recognizing the value of the TRT, the National Cooperative Highway Research Program recently developed a strategic plan for TRT enhancement including: software acquisition; adding terminology that covers current trends; increasing engagement of subject-matter experts in terminology development; and the ability to create customized TRT segment reports.
