Abstract:

To examine the role the urban built environment plays in infectious diseases, the Forum on Microbial Threats at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, in collaboration with the Board on Life Sciences, hosted a public workshop in December 2017. This article summarizes topics explored during the forum including: the definition of slums; routes of human exposure to microbes; policies that have been successful in helping to mitigate infectious disease transmission including infrastructure investment; and the role collaboration can play in possible solutions.
