Abstract:

This paper introduces a prototype of urban freeway ramp metering control system that is developed based on trajectory data. Crowdsourced vehicle trajectory data from ride-hailing service providers such as Didi in China provide an alternative data source that is continuous, reliable, and low-cost for freeway traffic management. The system’s main functions include traffic diagnosis and traffic control, which aim at advising traffic agencies to improve freeway traffic operation efficiency. Traffic diagnosis of the system focuses on identifying spill-back on freeways and traffic control of the system committed to preventing spill-back or decreasing the negative effect of spill-back. In the paper, the authors introduce the framework and data flow of the system, as well as the methods that are used for traffic diagnosis and traffic control. The system has been implemented in a freeway stretch in Jinan city, China. Field test results demonstrate that the system can significantly reduce the time duration of spill-back.
