Abstract: Since urban sprawl has an impact on suburban areas, it is important to be able to use multi-modal transportation systems to have easier access to urban areas. Transportation systems are being revamped around transit centers in urban areas to facilitate access to the urban area from the suburbs. Research studies are being conducted to improve the accessibility of public transportation by using the concept of the hub-and-spoke. In this study, the authors develop a coverage area index (CAI) to assess quantitatively the impact of a transit center on access to urban areas from the suburbs. The concept of network centrality and the kernel density function are used to evaluate the extent of the influence of a transit center. The smart card data in the Seoul metropolitan area are used to analyze the CAI. Four transit centers in the Seoul metropolitan area are analyzed to compare the coverage area to the transit center. The bandwidth of the kernel density function is set as 2 km based on the consideration of the size and influence of each region. A method of evaluating the four transit centers by CAI is presented in comparison with transit accessibility (TA). The authors also analyze the difference of CAI size to identify the areas that are not being served effectively by the transit center. The CAI developed by this study contributes to evaluating accessibility to each transit center.
