Title: Modeling Freight Generation, Commodity Contracts, and Shipments for SimMobility Freight – a Disaggregate Agent-Based Urban Freight Simulator

Abstract: Despite a growing need for the simulation tools to evaluate urban freight policies, the modeling systems for urban freight simulations, especially for the agent-based commodity flow simulations, are still in their early stage of the development. In this paper, the authors propose a new modeling approach that considers the three distinct units for commodity flows – annual quantities to ship or receive, commodity contracts, and shipments, each of which is suitable to a different type of the decisions relevant to the commodity flows. The authors propose a modeling system for the urban commodity flow simulation, integrated into an agent-based passenger and freight urban microsimulation platform, SimMobility, and test the performance of the model components. A large-scale establishment-based urban freight survey, the 2013 Tokyo Metropolitan Freight Survey, was used for the model estimation. The comparison between the observed and simulated data attests the good reproducibility performance of the modeling system for practical use. This research provides a valuable case of using an establishment-based urban freight survey data for the agent-based, fully disaggregate model development, although achieving a high reproducibility performance at the agent-level is still challenging.
