Abstract:

In 2011, Multnomah County, Oregon, changed the delivery method for the Sellwood Bridge Replacement Project from a traditional design–bid–build (DBB) to construction manager–general contractor (CM/GC), because the budget had become increasingly tighter as the design had advanced. This brief article outlines the use of alternative technical concepts and alternative contracting in the project which ultimately reduced the schedule by nearly a year and saved millions of dollars.
