Abstract:

Crowd logistics delivery operations are carried out by using excess capacity and drivers from the crowd, relying on their planned tours, thereby offering potential for economic, social and environmental benefits. This paper offers a pioneering study of the performance of a real crowd-shipping system in the U.S. using empirical data from two years of operations. Nested Logit analysis of delivery outcomes in urban and suburban areas is carried out, controlling for delivery request factors, land-use and socio-demographic variables. The analytical framework focuses on both the performance in terms of getting bids for a delivery, as well as successfully concluding deliveries to customers. Results show that delivery outcome performances vary significantly between urban and suburban areas. Moreover, the explanatory factors vary significantly for the two areas, suggesting the need to different strategies to foster and improve the performance of this novel system.
